NUTR SCI 132 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Erythropoiesis, Dietary Fiber, Female Athlete Triad
Document Summary
Three components: low energy availability/disordered eating not enough calories to support training. And good health: bone loss/osteoporosis decreased bone density (osteopenia, menstrual disturbances/amenorrhea lack of menstruation, osteopenia, amenorrhea caused by low energy availability, reversible, improves with treatment, treatment. Doesn"t necessarily involve disordered eating, sometimes athletes are just not getting enough calories. Recommendations: dietary protein: 10-15% total kcals, fuel source (long duration exercise, used for gluconeogenesis, tissue repair and growth after exercise (anabolism) needs protein for this, so, athletes require more protein. 2x that of sedentary population: protein requirement can be fulfilled by food, supplements may be useful when meals are not feasible. Complete protein required to promote tissue repair (e. g. whey protein) Complete protein: all essential amino acids present in right quantities. Animal products are typically complete proteins: e. g. beef, poultry, fish, dairy. Amino acids act as a signal to build muscle: signal can be saturated, more is not always better. Excess amino acids can be used for energy.
