PSYCH 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Conjunction Fallacy, Frontal Lobe, Temporal Lobe
Document Summary
Decision making: why do we make decision making errors, frequency format hypothesis: our minds evolved to notice how frequently thing occur, not how likely they are to occur. Probability is a more recent mathematical tool in evolution: doctor example: Task: predict breast cancer when mammogram shows possible cancer. Only 1% of people have breast cancer and radiologists identify falsely. 5 dollars mean something more in context of how much money spending: risk aversion: choice of 1000 dollars with certainty or 50% chance of getting. In-group/out-group bias: some people are more likely to develop associations between aversive events and members of an out-group: those people appear to be more likely to be racially biased. Formation of in-group and out-group distinctions appear to occur early in life. Out-group homogeneity effect- all people like x are all the same. In-group favoritism: cooperation can reduce prejudice: working together for a greater purpose may help people overcome group hostilities.
