BIOL 2652 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cadherin, Glycoprotein, Intermediate Filament
Document Summary
Chapter 4: group of cells with specialized activities, tissues = cells + matrix, can be hard (bone), semisolid (fat), or liquid (blood) Cells in most tissues are connected by junctions. Intracellular junctions mechanical connections between cell membranes. Keep materials from leaking out of organs like the stomach and bladder. Makes adhesions belt that keeps tissues from separating as they stretch and contract. Cadherin is a glycoprotein that forms belt-like plaque. Uses cadherin glycoprotein (plus intermediate filaments) to hook on cytoplasm. Half-welds that join cells to the basement membrane. Pores (connections) that allow ions to pass between cells. If one cell dies, others seal the space so other cells won"t get damaged: where tissues come from. 3 germ layers: endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm.
