BIOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Homeostasis, Escherichia Coli, Cyanobacteria
Document Summary
It took life almost 600 million years to arise. Stimulus is anything that can be detected by a life form (light, temperature, moisture, nutrients/food, chemical signals from other organisms, physical touch, etc. ) Organisms adapt due to evolution by natural selection. Camouflage: still involves the passing down of dna from parent to offspring, offspring are similar (but not identical) to parents. Cells specialize for certain tasks: making a copy of their dna, one cell splits into two identical cells. Organisms grow and develop according to their genes. Gene- a segment of dna that contain information for a specific protein (recipe in a cookbook) Maintaining homeostasis: constant internal conditions, temperature, ph, other o(cid:396)ga(cid:374)is(cid:373)s (cid:894)(cid:862)food(cid:863)(cid:895, the sun (photosynthesis) All organisms require energy for their metabolic processes. Adaptations include: the digestive system, behavior, anatomical structures, metabolism. Can bond with each other to form molecules. Atoms- smallest unit of matter (consists of nucleus surrounded by electrons)
