Anabolic reactions build protein, dna, carbs and lipids. Typically provided in the form of atp. Atp is produced in the catabolic breakdown of organic molecules eaten as food. Maximizes energy capture in energy transfer molecules. Atp hydrolysis (-7. 3 kcal/mol - energy from adp to atp or visa versa) releases energy to drive other reactions. Cells have to continuously generate atp to provide energy for other reactions. Oxidation to lower free energy releases electrons (oil) Electrons are transferred to a carrier that passes them onto a final electron acceptor. Found in nearly all organisms (aerobic and anaerobic) Does not consume oxygen, but does oxidize intermediates. 2 net atp (4 gross, remember splitting) 2 pyruvate (about 580 kcal/mol of energy left) What happens to pyruvate depends on oxygen.
