Sexual behaviors that involve a craving for an erotic object that is unusual or different. The behavior causes significant distress and interferes with the ability to work and interact. No classic profiles, although the majority of paraphiliacs are men and are married. For some, the fantasy or presence of their desire is necessary for arousal and orgasm. A prime characteristic of a paraphilia: the act replaces complex human sexual contact with undemanding sexuality of inanimate object, scene, or single action. Fetishist needs the presence or fantasy of an item for arousal, sometimes with a partner. An inanimate object or body part not usually associated with sex becomes the main focus of sexual arousal and orgasm. Intentional infliction of physical or psychological pain, humiliation, or suffering on another person to achieve sexual excitement. Common activities or fantasies: restraint, blindfolding, strangulation, beating, burning, pinching, whipping, spanking, electrical shocks, torture, and in some cases, murder.
