PSYC 2034 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Executive Functions, Dishabituation, Metacognition
Document Summary
Once in memory you pull it out and think about them which creates response. Encoding: info gets into memory, automaticity, ability to process info with little or no effort, strategy construction, metacognition. Speed of processing info: test using reaction time tasks, how fast respond to stimulus, changes in speed processing. Not necessary in most situations but has advantages to those that have quick processing speed. Ability to focus mental resources to take in info. Three ways: sustained, readiness to detect and respond to small changes, selective, focus on specific aspects, divided, ability to concentrate on more than one thing at a time. Adolescence: processing of irrelevant info decreases, ability to switch back and forth from activities, better at multitasking. Older adults less able to focus on relevant info. Years 50-80 perform worse in divided attention condition. Memory encoding: getting info into memory storage, retaining info over time retrieval taking info out of storage.
