Document Summary

Lecture 13: creating a single observation from raw data. Nonstandard fields are numeric fields with values containing special characteries (i. e. $, %, interpretable fractions, hexadecimal, data/time values, commas etc. ) that still recognizes the values as interpretable numeric data. Like standard fields, nonstandard fields can also use the infile and input statements but with minor adjustments. Tell sas to bring in certain fields into the new sas dataset. Tell sas how to read and interpret the values of the fields that we want to import (informats). Cannot just put in the input and infile statements. Pointer controls tell has how to read in values and which values to read in. By default, sas reads in fields left to right and doesn"t skip any values. Pointer controls allow us to override this default. When you do this, you must tell sas how to read in all of the fields of interest.
