Document Summary

All living cells need energy in order to function. For animals, this energy is found in chemical bonds of consumed food substrates- these are the energy input. Energy contained in nutrients is measured in kilocalories (calories) Important in diet as the preferred source of products for atp production. Stored in liver as glycogen: can be broken down into glucose if blood sugar is too low, can be stored in muscle as a local supply when energy production is necessary, lipids. Largest atp production for any of the macronutrients: proteins. The last resort to be used in generation of atp. Consume protein which is broken down into amino in the small intestine: these building are then used to generate new proteins in the cells. Energy output (expenditure) comes in two forms: external work: energy expended when skeletal muscles contract to move objects or the body. Walking around campus: internal work: all other forms not involved in mechanical work outside the body.
