PHIL 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: A Priori And A Posteriori
Document Summary
Mystic (denies that we can know the nature of god) We can know god exists through a priori arguments. Thinks empirical evidence can prove the nature of god. Thinks that empirical information cannot prove the nature of god. Existence of god isn"t the issue, the nature is. Basic principle is not that order needs a cause, that is a posteriori knowledge. Regularities in the universe we can observe, they can continue. Perfection, but you can"t know anything else about the nature of god until you know what. A posteriori arguments needed to understand how the world works. Philo agrees a posteriori can be used for cause & effect. Need to have similar events to infer a similar cause & effect. Analogy between machine and universe is invalid, can"t infer from part to whole. Don"t have the experience to known origin of the universe, we weren"t there. Common sense is not equal to a priori knowledge.
