Structure and Function
-cells: smallest functioning unit in the human body
specialized depending on where they are located
-tissues: groups of similar cells with similar functions
neural: specialized for initiating and transporting electrical signals
-brain, spinal chord, and throughout the body
muscular: contracting and movement
-smooth: involuntary
-striated: voluntary
-cardia: involuntary heart movement
epithelial: change material with the environment
-sheets: lining of structures
-secretory: release sweat, hormones, etc.
connective: anchor and support other structures
-blood, tendon, ligaments, etc.
-organ: a group of tissues that perform a specialized function
-body system: group of organs that have a similar goal
Compartments and Function
-total body water
intracellular fluid (ICF): inside cells
extracellular fluid (ECF): outside cells
-plasma: liquid portion of blood
-interstitial fluid: fluid that bathes the cells
-free exchange of plasma and interstitial fluid
-no free exchange between the ICF and the ECF
