Mother (mam) works late nights, is often confused about the time of day or what day it is. Brothers usually go with it to avoid getting in trouble. Mother and father have an abusive relationship. They get along at parts of the book, but he often rapes her and beats her. The father (paps) takes anger out on whoever is there to receive it. The youngest brother, the speaker, is different than his brothers. He is smarter, and thinks more into his decisions. He could either be successful, or be broken due to his fragileness. The book is broken into different scenes of his childhood. This is considered a coming-of-age story or a bildungsroman. Six snatching hands and stomping feet butts were leather whipped . These metaphors set the reader up for the story. Most of them are negative setting the mood.
