PSY 320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Second Messenger System, Psych, Neuroplasticity
Document Summary
Some receptors are coupled directly to ion channels. Some indirectly coupled to ion channels or cellular processes. Ions move according to concentration gradient: can also control a channel indirectly. Does(cid:374)"t have to (cid:271)e a sodiu(cid:373) (cid:272)ha(cid:374)(cid:374)el. Pretty quick change but there are steps in between. Metabolic receptors are also called slow receptors. So it is all relative: real slow part is intermediate. That is what makes it slow (second messenger) Can initiate a whole cascade of events. Can amplify signal or initiate other signaling throughout cell. Could include signaling that reaches all the way to dna. Effect or affect change in regulation of genes. Could increase or decrease transcription of certain gene. Could be beginning in changes that end in neuroplastic events like learning: do(cid:374)"t (cid:374)eed to (cid:373)e(cid:373)orize parti(cid:272)ular re(cid:272)eptors, just know there are complicated proteins and different places of interaction.
