Free trade from 1750-1850, british took over indian trade. East indian company, started free trade with trading posts all up and down the coast. By the early 1800"s the british had control over almost all of india. Military hardware for the british kept getting better. British started studying indian culture so they could begin to rule effectively. 1840 brought new policy to india by direct rule. No more rulers, no more indian tax collectors. They switched the economy of india by making textiles and providing raw materials for export, and by importing finished goods from britain. By 1850 the british colonies caused resentment and complete turmoil in india. Began in 1644, still prosperous to early 1800"s. Formed new villages, grew the population and outstripped food supplies. This brought droughts, famine, hard times, and strained resourses. British wants to trade chinese tea in exchange for silver.
