: each body part has an essence that is transmitted via the sex cells to offspring (an essence for hands, one for the nose, etc. ) Aristotle: if hippocrates" model were true, that means that if somebody lost a limb, their baby would be born without it as well. However, even people lacking certain body parts produce offspring that are perfectly healthy, therefore hippocrates must be wrong. Darwin: this was the same model as hippocrates, except he used the terms gemmules for. essence and pangenesis to describe the process by which they are transmitted. Weismann: cut the tails off of newborn mice for 22 generations to see if the next generation would be born without tails, but they were always born with tails, indicating that darwin was incorrect. Gregor mendel: classic experiments with the garden pea. Different strains have very distinct characteristics, so he could obtain strains that differed in easily scored characters.
