Document Summary

Research methods: case studies, in-depth look at a single individual, have to be careful about generalizing results, standardized tests, ex. Sat/iq test, standard set of questions: physiological measures, using heart rate/brain waves to assess something, ex. Describes strength and direction of relationship between 2 variables. Only thing that changes is the treatment. Behavior and events that we try to define. Cross-sectional design: assess individuals of different ages all at roughly the same time, advantage, practical, cheaper, disadvantage, cohort effect: differences between age groups is due to generation issues, not age differences. Longitudinal design: assess the same individuals at different times, advantages, gets rid of cohort effect, problems, harder to do, more expensive and more time consuming. Sequential/time lag design: test different cohorts at different years, combine cross-sectional and longitudinal, no cohort and no timing effect, expensive and takes a long time.
