PSYC 241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Cognitive Development, Egocentrism
Document Summary
Engage in pretend play (pretending hand is a phone) Child gains ability to mentally represent an object that"s not physically there. Cognitive development: piaget: limits of preoperational thought. Focus on one dimension/aspect of an object or situation and neglect everything else. Assess egocentrism ask child what they see goat. Ask child what they think the adult should see if they say goat, they are still in preoperational stage. Preoperational: think taller cup has more water even though it"s the same amount. Ability to organize things along some quantitative dimension(?: transitive inference. Ability to logically combine relations to understand certain conclusions. Ex. batman is stronger than superman, superman is stronger than green lantern. What"s the relationship between batman and green lantern? (batman is stronger) Are there more girls in the class or more people in the class. Limitations of concrete operational thought: children still need concrete information.
