Calculus-based introduction to the central concepts, laws, and structure of physics, presented in an active learning environment. The course is structured around three themes that are treated in depth: conservation laws, Newtonian physics, and special relativity. A daily regimen of homework and reading, as well as weekly homework assignments, small group problem-solving exercises, and active class participation are integral parts of this course. Concurrent registration in a Physics 197 lab section is required. Attendance is required in both lecture and lab; students may only attend the lecture and lab section for which they are registered. Two evening exams, at which attendance is required, will be given from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on October 1 and November 12, followed by a required final exam given from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on December 14. Co-requisite: Calculus II (Math 132). Credit may not be obtained for both Physics 117A and Physics 197 and students may not simultaneously enroll in both courses.
