Document Summary

Teachers begin lessons with a do or an activity instead of a tell. English language learners can t understand talking so we have to think of visuals and manipulatives that we can use to build background knowledge rather than relying on talk. Children need to see themselves in what they are doing, activities need to be authentic, activities have to be meaningful. Reading instruction should go from student to teacher to knowing about teaching reading to preparation programs. A teacher should know what students are expected to know in order to be successful readers. If the student is a good reader than the 2nd thing would be to know what instructional opportunities are necessary to support students. This involves what the teacher is doing, what instructional opportunities are required to support the students. The next thing is to know what successful teachers need to know about reading and how to teach reading.
