Document Summary

Golgi apparatus: a collection of flattened membrane enclosed compartments called cisterna. Interconnected structures are called cis golgi network (cgn: proteins enter and move forward through golgi or retrieved, trans face: exit face. Interconnected structures are called trans golgi network (tgn: proteins exit and move onwards from the golgi or retrieved, sorting according to the location they need to go next. Proteins arrive at cgn and enter cis cisterna then the media cisterna then the trans cisterna then the tgn where they exit. Recall, in the er, n-linked oligosaccharides are added and trimmed to proteins and are used as quality control to make sure the protein is folded properly. Glycosylation: as protein passes through the cgn through the cisterna all the way to the tgn, the protein can get oligosaccharide chains added to it: some proteins just need to have them as part of their structure. It is destroyed in the er but added back in the golgi.
