Rules enable action but are also far away from us. With the law: law is a game of rules but the rules can be changed . Against the law: law is a product of power , the law is arbitrary and not fair. The primary objective of the early indian act was to ensure the eventual disappearance of indians. They would attempt to achieve this through entitlement criteria, which ensures legislative extinction after 2 generations of marrying out. This resulted in 2 separate legal categories of indians: status and non-status. Where being a non-status indian means you don"t get access to essential services. The denial of federal recognition to non-status indians has, in some cases, resulted in the erosion of indigenous identity, culture and communal community. In the first indian act, the criteria for status was largely based on a one parent descent rule - as long as the descent was from a male person of indian blood.
