In this course on the sociology of the body we will focus on what the body does, rather than on what is done to the body. The purpose of this course is to assist you to develop a critical understanding of the complex relationship between human embodiment, cognitive (thinking) and conative (disposition) processes and human social interaction. Soci4070a is a fully online course based on individual exchanges between you, the student, and me, the instructor. These exchanges involve you submitting written work in response to assignments based on assigned readings and video materials and me commenting on and grading that written work. The course is divided into four themed sections: Theme 1 - embodiment, habitus and bourdieu"s theory of practice. Theme 2 embodiment, carnal sociology and enactive ethnography: a toolkit for re- considering the use of the body in sociological research. Theme 4: embodiment and human/ humanoid robot interactions .
