ITEC 3210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Data Link Layer, Wireless Lan, Category 5 Cable

11 views6 pages

Document Summary

Note: some concepts are not covered, see slides. Physical layer: transmission of bits over circuit in lans, wlans, bbns, mans and wans. Data link layer: media access controls, message delineation, message delivery and error control. Physical circuit: cabling in our network or radio waves (aka communication or transmission media). Logical circuit: transmission characteristic of circuits: point-to-point circuit: multiple computer using circuits simultaneously, operation of switch and hubs. This circuit is good because no one has to wait to transmit: multipoint circuit: shared circuits, not two computers send data at the same type, note: switch and hub are not same. Full duplex: computers can send and receive at the same time. Half duplex: computers can send and receive but not both at the same time. Shielded: shielded will have extra layer and material that will be used to reduce the interference from the external sources. Cable grading: using category rating such as cat 5, to support higher nominal data rates.
