PSYC 260 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Longitudinal Study, Extraversion And Introversion, Binge Eating
Document Summary
These studies indicate that chimps and orangutans have a rudimentary self-concept. They realize that the image in the mirror is them and not another animal and recognize that they look different from the way they looked before. Humans and found that self-recognition develops at around 18 to 24 months of age. Studies found that our desire to see ourselves in a positive light can influence which of our past actions we are most likely to remember. According to the researchers, when people are motivated to see themselves as possessing a desired quality or trait, they conduct a selective memory search for examples of past behaviours consistent with that trait. This body of evidence then allows them to draw the rational conclusion that the desirable trait is part of their self- schemas. A recent series of studies conducted at the university of western ontario confirms and extends these findings.
