Random variable definition: in contrast to variables, constants do not vary. Random because the values a variable can take on are associated with a set of probabilities. Variable because it can take on more than one value and thus the values can vary from one another. Discrete random variables they are those that can only take on values that are made up of disjointed categories. These categories can be ordered or increasing but they are distinct from one another. (i. e. likert scale) Continuous random variables: it can take values along an entire interval of the number line (sometimes this interval has no boundaries and can extend to infinity) and these values are not disjointed. (i. e. length, mass, reaction time) It deal with a set of scores observed on a variable. In other words, empirical distributions deal with real data that has been collected by a researcher. They are associated with sample and describing sample statistics.
