Document Summary

Biodiversity: differentiation in gene species, diversity among species in an ecosystem, variation of characteristic within a species. In general in regards to biodiversity we are trying to focus on how much variation there is. There is 10 million species that we know of. We need both ecology and evolution to understand biodiversity. Evolution is really responsible for driving biodiversity, an example could be speciation(how we get new species). Evolutionary mechanisms that drive speciation, and can also either reduce variation or increase variation. The key is wee need a divergence, we can not have gene flow because we know gene flow makes two different populations look similar. As well we need evolutionary processes that make population two and population one look different enough. Speciation happens with barriers to gene flow. Species is split due to a geographic barrier or because some individuals move to a separate place. Species are split by reproductive separation even though they are in the same place.
