Document Summary

What do you think has shaped your personality and that of others around you?genes and environment (nature/ nurture) If you ask most people, what has formed your personality, they commonly report life experiences such as parental rearing/family environment. Eg . in my clinical practice, people frequently interpret their personality and current psychic problems as being due to rearing and want to talk about their family. Historically, most psychological theories about where personality comes from have similarly focused on how rearing and other experiences shape personality. Parents that read to their children tend to have better literacy. Parents that are violent and aggressive in punishment have aggressive children. We often fail to recognize that parents also share the same genes as children. Mz vs dz twin studies suggest heritability estimates of about 0. 5 for personality traits. Shared environment - what they share, parental practice, neighborhood, family life. Adult siblings personalities are equally correlated whether they grew up together or apart.
