Week 6 - lesson 6: diversity and social justice. The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual difference. The differences can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status. The exploration of these differences must be done in a safe, positive and nurturing space. Acceptance and respect is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebration the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. Allows us to learn form others who"s experiences, beliefs and perspectives are different from our own. Allows us to learn from the experiences, beliefs and perspectives of others. Leads us to be more motivated to take the perspective of others. Fosters an appreciation for both group differences and commonalities. Leads to improved decision-making processes by increasing creativity and innovation. Contributes to greater acceptance of people from different cultures and races.
