Week 5 - lesson 5: benefits and challenges of community engagement. Building a positive and healthy community depends on bringing people together through the establishment and maintenance of long-term relationships. Those involved in community include students, parents, educators, health professionals, agencies, institutions, organizations, etc. For individuals: learning through experiential learning while acquiring and applying new skills and knowledge, connecting with local and wider communities, developing and expressing opinions effectively and with confidence, improving organizational, leadership and research skills, engaging in critical reflection. For governments: creating policies and delivering community services more effectively and efficiently, noticing pertinent issues and helping government to work more closely with communities on community issues, enhancing the reputation of government as open and willing to listen. Summer 2021: cultural differences between organizations and communities, understanding and managing power dynamics, managing time and deadlines, keeping those involved motivated when there is a lack of incentives, managing operational factors (e. g. money, lack of resources)
