Document Summary

There are no conditions under which lying is morally permissible, according to immanuel kant. He claimed that morality is based on our ability to make free, logical decisions, and that lying is an attack on morality because it seeks to weaken this ability. Kant further stated that the moral law requires us to treat others as ends in themselves, whereas lying requires us to treat others only as means. Building trust and honesty is fundamental in our daily lives. But sometimes there are given situations where lying is necessary. I"d agree with kant if we lived in a society where everyone is good and trustworthy, but that isn"t feasible. We can"t focus about kants" notion of what breaches morality in these complex situations; we have to use our intelligence to get a better outcome. If i had followed kant"s principles, it could have costed someone"s life.
