Apply self-report methods to understand your own personality. Analyze the personality roots of violence and prejudice. Analyze the relative roles of personality traits and psychological and physical states in determining behaviour. Personality: characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that is unique to each individual, and remains relatively consistent over time and situations. Idiographic approach: creating detailed descriptions of a specific person"s unique personality characteristics. Used to examine full range of human experience. Criminal profiler(s) completing a detailed study on a serial killer to help police apprehend them. Nomothetic approach: looking at large groups of ppl to make generalizations about personality structure. Focus on what personality factors/traits are relevant to understanding ppl in general. Extraversion is a nomothetic trait b/c it can describe everyone. Allows psychologists to look at what types of ppl are more/less likely to engage in certain behaviours.
