Document Summary

Delays between crowding and its effects on population growth. It is a mathematical approx. based on a very simplified model. The real world is much more complicated and carriable. Many pop do not behave according to the logistic equation. Carrying capacity is not a hard and fast constant. A model is a way to summarize what is known about a pop, it is a formal description of an idea. All models are wrong, but some are useful- george box. It allows to describe and understand past and present trends, and project them into the future. Models are always a simplification of nature. Underlying assumptions have to be made explicit. The model can be refined as one understands the situation better. Logistic does predict an equilibrium, a density dependent equilibrium, so that when the density is too high when there too many individuals per unit area or volume, the pop will decline until it comes back into equilibrium.
