Russia"s communist experiment lasted from 1917 to 1991, had massive impact on world history. Today"s lecture will introduce you to fascinating and violent history of the creation of the soviet. We will look at causes of the 1917 revolution, how it was achieved, and violent fate of its utopian promise during the rule of joseph stalin. After revolution, through the twentieth century, more strongly than ever before, people defined themselves in ideological terms, on a political spectrum from left to right, communist, socialist, liberal, conservative, capitalist. We will focus on a few important concepts: (1) class, (2) communism, (3) totalitarianism, and (4) the cold war. 300 year-old romanov monarchy, lasted from 1613 to 1917. Oversaw a vast empire stretching from poland to siberia. Russia in late 19th century was mainly rural, agrarian society. About 80 per cent of the population was comprised of peasants. Russia was experiencing modest industrialization and urbanization.
