CRI365H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Actor Model, Rational Agent, Neurology
Document Summary
Legal, psychological, and sociological conceptions of the mind/intent. Different models emerged outside & inside legal debates not limited to legal considerations. Basic anglo-american legal conception of the mind predates development of modern science of psychology & modern mental medicine. The traditional legal conception of the mind reflects broader pre-psychological understanding of the mind. Broader conception not fully captured by emphasizing the familiar contrast btw the law"s concept of an autonomous intentional acting subject (voluntarism) & the idea of psychological causation (determinism) May seem easy to understand traditional legal notions of right & wrong & intention in contrast to modern psychology & sociology. But broader pre-psychological model is alien to us. Tend to think about mind in psychological way but is actually quite difficult to understand traditional legal. Development & increasing sophistication of machinery is key. Up until renaissance intellectuals (religious people) not very interested in machines (weren"t very interesting at the time tbh)
