Intersectionality theory of compounded marginal identities. Paradigm for analysing how various forms of social inequality, oppression, discrimination interact to construct certain subpopulations of persons as criminals or victims. Set of principles & practices that emerged in europe over past 3 centuries. Shaped both governmental rationalities (ways of thinking) & technologies (ways of acting ) How various authority figures and social institutions exercise power & govern criminality in specifically gendered ways. Policing as social practice covered wide variety of interactions around social order. Not just about crime fighting or law enforcement. Older sense of police as governance all manners of order keeping. Ex. ensuring efficiency of commercial markets, transportation infrastructure, waste management, crowd control. Wide swath of institutions, actors, and interactions underneath it. Later more anglosaxon concept of policing began to take over. Narrow the way people used term police prevention & detection of crime, in line of legal codes defining criminality .
