Go inside prisons and research prison experience from within. How prisons function, not how prisons function in society. Debunking myths present in common sense about prisons. Mid 50s research around 1200 prisoners, 300 officers. Very concerned about rise of totalitarian power after ww2. The closest thing to concentration camp in our society is prison but definitely softer. Was able to access prison and get a lot of information prison research not easy. Princeton prof met warden of prison in some discussion group thing and invited him to prison to do research. Prison custodians only seem to be fully in control. Total power over prisoners is a myth. Violations to rules not punished, documented, pursued. Prison has a lot of rules guards don"t control all of them. Prisoners follow some rules, break others system operates in that way. Guard pretending to not notice misbehaviour, etc. Why people obey law sense of moral duty to obey.
