CRI386H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Critical Criminology, Animal Husbandry, Historically Informed Performance
Document Summary
Encouraged to think in 2 related registers. 1) the critical criminological analysis of various policies includes historical analysis, analysis of the interests & projects policies serve. The presentation of historical material will be a little unusual not just key historical instances & texts, but deep cultural history. 2) constructive policy evaluation analysis of what policy or set of policies we should follow & why and how these fit into overall governing decisions. Such as wider sets of priorities & limited budgets. Note despite critical analysis, we aren"t going to assume policy ideas. Can conclude policy idea is dubious & has dubious origins we discuss are useless or even avoidable. On other hand can conclude that there is good current evidence to support policy. Can also come to more nuanced conclusion. Key thing remember you should not just discuss the current evaluations & ignore history or write critical history that ignores current empirical analyses & policy evaluations.
