Document Summary

Ionic and covalent bonds are the two primary forms of bonding in atoms. Ionic bonds are the linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between two oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound. This bond forms when valence electrons of one atom are transferred to another permanently, covalent bonds are a mutual sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms. Electrons are simultaneously attracted by two atomic nuclei. They form when there is a small difference in the electronegativities of both of the atoms. Because of this, an electron transfer cannot occur to form ions. Covalent bonding can be polar or nonpolar depending on the atom"s electronegativities.
