CHEM 220 Lecture Notes - Phenethyl Alcohol, Hydroboration, Benzene
Document Summary
Chem 220 experiment 3 post-lab summary report: hydroboration oxidation of styrene. Weight of empty rb flask w/ cork: 89. 07g. After the completion of experiment 3, hydroboration-oxidation of styrene, i achieved a percent yield of 59. 447% and a product that was 57. 19% phenylethyl alcohol and 42. 81% alpha-methylbenzyl alcohol. My percent yield was calculated by using the mass of my product and dividing by the theoretical yield that was found in the lab manual. 59. 447% is low and something that may have attributed to this was a loss of product during the washing procedures. My alcohol breakdown was favored towards phenylethyl alcohol, the anti-markovnikov product which was expected. I calculated the alcohol percent by adding up the signals from each molecule and dividing them by the number of h"s present in the molecule. Both molecules had a 5h integration around 7. 0-7. 5 which accounted for the benzene ring.
