Document Summary

Lecture 7: comparative methodology in study of religion. Comparative religion is used for various meanings. A systematic and disciplined approach in comparing different religious traditions" doctrines, practices, impacts, and themes. Was once one of the most celebrated methods in academic study of religion. Some scholars use a historical descriptive approach in surveying world religions. This approach is present in many of world religions" textbooks. Comparative religion"s cross cultural claims questions the very possibility of such a methodology. This type of comparison distorts the meanings of collected religious data. Presents broad and sweeping claims and categories that do not exist. The prominent early western scholars of comparative religion used questionable methods such as arbitrary generalization of specific and marginal data. They also had implicit theological agenda or perspective; i. e. , proving the superiority of christianity. Scholars who critiqued comparative religion did not argue for dismissing it entirely. Comparison is the basis for human knowledge and cannot be abandoned.
