BIOL 011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Ecosystem Ecology, Population Ecology, Trophic State Index
Document Summary
Ecologists are scientists who study the interactions of organisms and their environment. Population ecology: this level focuses on factors that in uence population growth and decline. Community ecology: this level focuses on the interactions of species living in the same area and includes biotic factors like predator/prey interactions, competition, and symbioses. Ecosystem ecology: this level focuses on the abiotic factors that ow or cycle through the community and physical features of the environment. Environmental factors (non living) can be abiotic, which means non-living, or biotic, which means living. If you thought about a desert, a tropical rainforest, and the arctic, you"d probably be able to describe some basic features about their differing climates. Experience differing intensities of sunlight, differing air circulation patterns, and differing precipitation levels. Because earth is tilted on its axis, we experience seasons as it rotates around the sun.
