Document Summary

The holocaust was a genocide during world war ii in which nazi germany, aided by its collaborators, systematically murdered approximately six million jews, around two-thirds of europe"s. The victims included 1. 5 million children and represented about two-thirds of the nine million jews who had resided in europe. Some definitions of the holocaust also include the murders of romani people, disabled individuals, homosexuals, political dissidents, and others deemed undesirable by the nazi regime. The germans carried out the genocide by killing jews in mass shootings, gassing them in extermination camps, and by a variety of other means. The germans and their collaborators also plundered jewish property, stripped jews of their civil rights, and forced them to perform slave labor. Many of the survivors were left physically and emotionally scarred, and many suffered from post- traumatic stress disorder for the rest of their lives.
