Document Summary

No vascular bundle- just absorb and loss water but have no control over retaining it. Mosses do all sorts of ecosystem services- all plants have some sort of use. These plants are small, grow close to the ground on wet sites. Have little control over internal water content (like sponges), bc they don"t have vasculature. Do not restrict water loss - angiosperms can do this but bryophytes can"t. When habitat dries out, they also dry out. They are drought tolerators and not drought avoiders (highly evolved, stomata and evolved leaves) Tolerator: osmotic adjustments, cell wall elasticity- their mechanism for survival. Maintain osmotic balance by turning cellular content into cellulose rich (sugary) Here they are germinating into a protonema= allows it to spread across the land slowly= is there enough moisture to turn into gametophyte. Each protonema can produce multiple buds that can. Mult sperms or egg cells in each one. Fertilizaiotn happens on female gametophyte, embryo grows into female.
