Document Summary

Indulgence and restraint are two cultural dimensions much discussed in cultural psychology. These dimensions refer to the extent to which a society allows the satisfaction of basic human desires and the extent to which it controls the satisfaction of those desires. Hofstede"s theory of cultural dimensions includes the indulgence versus restraint dimension, which considers the extent to which and the tendency of a society to satisfy its desires. This paper will explore the differences between indulgence and restraint and their impact on society. Indulgence is a cultural pattern that emphasises the importance of enjoying life and having fun. In indulgent societies, people are allowed to satisfy their basic human desires, such as eating, drinking and having sex. These societies tend to be more relaxed and adhere less strictly to social norms. In contrast, restraint is a cultural pattern that emphasises the importance of controlling one"s desires.
