Oral cavity or mouth: the tongue and its muscles form the floor of the oral cavity. The upper surface of the tongue is covered by various projections called papillae of the tongue (lingual papilla: extending from the tongue to the floor of the oral cavity is a membranous membrane called the frenulum of tongue. If a person"s gums receded, this can be seen: deep to the enamel and the cementum is a hard material called dentin. Not as hard as the enamel which is the hardest natural substance is the human body. Interior of the tooth is composed of soft material called pulp: tooth root is anchored to the tooth socket by the periodontal ligament. Incisor teeth: spade-like used for biting off pieces of food. Two upper and two lower: canine teeth: cylindrical with a sharp point and are used for tearing off pieces of food, posterior to the canines are two upper and two lower premolar teeth.
