Question

in a fern reproductive cycle, does fertilization take place during the diploid sporophyte timeframe or in the haploid gametophyte timeframe? weird question I know but my teacher asked it today and I didn't know how to answer.

If i am correct, gametophytes create the gametes which then fertilize, then the zygote turns to embryo which becomes the sporophyte

Any help would be appreciated
