Case Study

"A 35-year old man is rushed to the hospital with breathlessness, fever, pain and a gross swelling of his left leg. His daughter had contracted chicken pox 3 weeks earlier and he caught the disease from her one-week ago. On visiting his primary care physician, the man was prescribed acyclovir and hydrocortisone cream (the latter to treat the blisters). The male patient was rushed to surgery where he was found to have severe purulence and dead muscle tissue in the calf of his leg, which tracked up to the thigh. Gram positive cocci in chains isolated from the lef were Beta-hemolytic on blood agar"

2. Pathogenesis: What are the virulence factors? How does this organsim cause pathology?

3. Laboratory finding: How would you diagnose this organism? What should you find?
