The enzyme threonine deaminase converts the amino acid threonine to 2-ketobutyrate. However, only l-threonine serves as a substrate. The enzyme does not recognize d-threonine as a substrate. Explain how L- and D-threonine are different, and why the enzyme does not recognize D-threonine.
