1. Phenylketonuria is a severe form of mental retardation caused by a homozygous recessive allele. This condition affects about 1 in 10,000 newborn Caucasians. Estimate the frequency of the carriers for this allele in the population assuming HWE.

2. A sample of 1066 Chukchi individuals, the native people of eastern Siberia, has been genotyped for the MN blood group, which is determined by a locus with 2 alleles (M and N). The observed number of individuals has been: MM, 165; MN, 562; and NN, 339. Determine: (a) the allele frequencies; (b) the genotype frequencies; and (c) whether or not the population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for this locus. Reason your answer.
