URGENT ASAP PLEASE Young vs. Old Forest (Carbon)

I know that an old forest has a lot of carbon stored than a young forest. Making the old forest a carbon sink and the young a carbon source.

I am confused about why an old forest has high Net Primary Production than a young forest and why a young forest has higher respiration than an old forest.

Also when an extreme event occurs, why is there is more dead trees in a young forest than an old forest?
